Safety Under Pressure: Managing Fatigue, Human Factors and Critical Risk in the Northern Territory

Event description

Safety Under Pressure: Managing Fatigue, Human Factors and Critical Risk in the Northern Territory is a practical, industry-focused training session examining why competent and experienced people can make unsafe decisions when operating under fatigue, heat, workload, production pressure and changing conditions.

Designed specifically for the Northern Territory environment, the session explores the risks associated with remote and isolated work, long-distance travel, contractor interfaces, limited supervision, workforce turnover and extreme climatic conditions.

Participants will learn how human factors—including situational awareness, communication, decision-making, complacency and authority gradients—can weaken otherwise well-designed safety systems.

Through realistic Territory-based scenarios and interactive exercises, participants will learn to identify critical risks, distinguish genuine control effectiveness from procedural compliance, and verify whether key controls are operating in the field.

The session will provide practical tools for supervisors, managers and safety professionals to recognise warning signs, manage fatigue, respond to changing conditions, escalate failed controls and prevent the gradual normalisation of unsafe practices.

The central message is that serious incidents rarely result from a single reckless act; they develop when small failures and warning signs are repeatedly accepted as normal.
