Custom Cabinets Katherine

Jeff Usher

You can hear Jeff’s story at the Stronger together: Katherine business dinner, featuring Brett Blake in Katherine on Friday 16 October 2026.

Jeff Usher’s journey as a Katherine business owner began unexpectedly when his car broke down in Mataranka while travelling around Australia. Towed into Katherine, Jeff found work to pay for the repairs and soon discovered a strong local demand for skilled cabinetmakers. With support from people in the community, he saw an opportunity and Custom Cabinets Katherine was born.

Today, the business delivers custom-made joinery for commercial and residential projects across Katherine and surrounding areas, competing successfully for major contracts alongside much larger businesses.

For Jeff, one of the strengths of doing business in the Territory is its diversity. One day the team might be working in a remote community and the next at RAAF Base Tindal. He thrives on the challenges, opportunities and can-do attitude that come with operating in regional and remote Australia.

Embracing change at Custom Cabinets Katherine is about knowing where change will make a difference. The business has adapted its purchasing strategies and workforce model to improve efficiency and respond to ongoing workforce pressures, while deliberately choosing to invest in people and practical skills.

Training and retaining a local workforce remains central to the business. With 2 apprentices nearing completion of their training, Jeff wants Custom Cabinets Katherine to continue providing pathways for the next generation of local tradespeople.

Whether taking on bigger commercial projects, supporting local sporting groups or developing local skills, Jeff’s approach is simple: back your people, embrace a challenge and create opportunities that keep investment and capability in the Katherine community.
