Ikuntji Artists
This multi-award-winning Indigenous art centre has gained an impressive reputation for fine art, fabric design, and printing. It is widely credited with introducing wearable art to the world.
Located in the remote community of Haasts Bluff in the West MacDonnell Ranges, Ikuntji Artists was first established as a women’s centre in 1992, providing services to old people and children. It evolved into an arts centre in 2005 and quickly became the community's cultural hub, revitalising cultural practices through artmaking and storytelling facilitated by brand collaborations.
Today, Ikuntji has 8 key artists whose prints, paintings, textiles, and jewellery are highly sought after and renowned for their bold colour choices and incisive brush strokes.
Manager Dr Chrischona Schmidt says, “We’ve created an inclusive space where artists are encouraged to experiment, innovate and push boundaries. It’s more than a studio space - Ikuntji is a tourist destination, gallery space, and cultural hub.”
You can hear Ikuntji’s story at the AusIndustry Business Support Showcase with Cathy Freeman OAM on Tuesday 8 October 2024.
