Kylie Straube is a highly respected nurse practitioner, healthcare leader and founder of Remote Territory Healthcare (RTHC), a pioneering nurse-led primary healthcare clinic serving rural communities south of Darwin. With more than 2 decades of experience delivering healthcare in remote and regional settings, Kylie has built a career around improving access to quality healthcare for people who are often underserved by traditional models of care.
After her community’s only medical clinic closed its doors, leaving thousands of residents without local access to primary healthcare, Kylie recognised both the challenge and the opportunity. Motivated by her daughter’s encouragement to act and make a difference, she took the bold step of establishing Remote Territory Healthcare, creating one of Australia’s first private nurse practitioner-led general practices. The clinic now delivers comprehensive healthcare services to individuals, families and communities across the Darwin rural area and beyond.
Kylie’s approach is centred on relationship-based care, focusing on the whole person rather than episodic treatment of individual symptoms. She works alongside individuals, families and communities to help them achieve their health goals and live their best lives. Her practice combines primary healthcare, mental health support, chronic disease management and multidisciplinary care with a strong emphasis on compassion, continuity and accessibility.
A passionate advocate for health system reform, Kylie works at both the clinical and policy level to improve healthcare services across the Northern Territory. She is known for her resilience, innovation and determination, embracing emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, through a harm-minimisation lens. Recognised nationally for her leadership, Kylie was named APNA Nurse of the Year in 2024 and received the 2026 HESTA Excellence Award for Individual Leadership and the 2026 NT News Health Hero Award.
Through determination, innovation and a commitment to providing accessible healthcare, Kylie transformed a critical service gap into a thriving model of relationship-based care for rural Territorians.
