Bec Bullen

Charlies Bar, Darwin Distilling Co. and Stone House Wine Bar & Kitchen

You can hear Rebecca’s story at the Women in Business Lunch with Ita Buttrose AC, OBE in Darwin on Thursday 20 October 2022.

Bec Bullen has brought a few glasses of Melbourne class to Darwin and Territorians have shown they love it.

After success with a wine bar in Melbourne, she opened the Stone House Wine Bar & Kitchen six years ago, followed by Charlie’s of Darwin restaurant bar and then Darwin Distilling Co with a focus on gin.

Stone House, located in one of the historic shop houses in Cavenagh Street, has had a colourful life – opium den, general store with family living above, salty plum depot and now European-inspired wine bar.

Charlie’s, which is based in the cafeteria of the old Woolies building, with a hidden entrance, followed. Bec then launched her signature gin distillery – Darwin Distilling Co.

She says her success in Melbourne prompted her to dive into the hospitality industry in Darwin.

“I think that Darwin has so much potential. I wanted to be part of that story. And it turned out Darwin has been good to me.”

Asked to name her most notable successes, she says: “I think I have succeeded because of hard work and have no real fear of failure, which allows me to take calculated risks coming from the position of  questioning myself ‘what is the worst that can happen?’”
